Some of the nation’s top gurgitators gathered at Madison Square Garden and competed to be crowned the “Chock full o’Nuts Date Nut Bread Eating Champion” by eating the most Chock full o’Nuts classic Date Nut Bread and Cream Cheese Sandwiches in ten minutes.
Joey Chestnut has not been able to restart his undefeated-by-an-American streak, which stood for nearly a year before the meatball contest at the Tropicana in December. Many thought that this would be the time for the 23-year-old to regain control of the field, but it was 21-year-old culinary student, Patrick Bertoletti who took home the top prize.
Bertoletti devoured 29 date nut bread and cream cheese sandwiches in eight minutes, followed by Chestnut with 26 and Humble Bob Shoudt with 18 3/4. Tim "Eater X" Janus finished in the money with 16.5. The beautiful Juliet Lee once again impressed the judges by tying with Erik the Red Denmark with 13 sandwiches for 4th place.
Chock full o’Nuts put up a generous $5,000 purse.
