Rouses World Crawfish Eating Championship

Rouses, Louisiana's Best supermarket, is hosting the second annual World Crawfish Eating Championship in New Orleans during the popular French Quarter Festival on Saturday, April 9th, 2011.

Last year, four thousand fans (Mario Batali among them) crowded the stage at the Old U.S. Mint to watch Sonya Thomas down 6.5 pounds of Louisiana Crawfish in 10 minutes. With this performance, Sonya secured the Rouses Crawfish Cup and shattered the former crawfish record of 4.9 pounds.

A prize purse of $2,000 will be up-for-grabs in the 10-minute sanctioned event. Competitors will need to peel and eat the fresh boiled crawfish, putting a strong emphasis on technique.

Each year, the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans gets bigger and bigger. The event features 17 outdoor stages and presents multiple genres of music and entertainment.
