Rouses Crawfish + New Orleans, LA + The French Quarter Festival = The three best reasons in the English language to pay attention! The Rouses Crawfish Eating World Championship returns for the fourth straight year to the hallowed streets of New Orleans, as part of the French Quarter Festival, a four-day event that draws roughly 400,000 visitors. Do you dare challenge the greatest eaters who have ever walked/rollerskated the planet in one of the most demanding disciplines on the MLE circuit? Yes? Good.

Rouses Markets boils Louisiana crawfish and serves up their famous dish to competitors, who must peel the crawfish to extract the meat during the 10-minute event. At the conclusion of last year’s event, MLE President Richard Shea explained Sonya Thomas’s victory thus:

“Once again, this event boiled down to hand speed and technique—and Sonya is a world-class eater who has never lost a contest in New Orleans. The crowd was huge and they displayed true Southern hospitality, cheering for Sonya as if she were a New Orleanian.”

The Black Widow secured her third straight Rouses Crawfish Cup by edging out Adrian Morgan, a resident of New Orleans, and the top-ranked eater in the great state of Louisiana. Sonya consumed 3 pounds 3 ounces of crawfish meat; Morgan consumed 2 pounds 5 ounces.

“Last year we boiled 35,000 pounds of crawfish, sausage, corn and potatoes,” said Donny Rouse of Rouses Markets, the company responsible for the enormous boil enjoyed by French Quarter Festival goers. “While festival goers are big fans of the Rouses boil, no one person can eat this delicacy faster than Sonya Thomas. Her hand-to-mouth speed is unrivaled.”

That was then. This is now. A new dawn. A new hope. Will there be a new champion? Be there!

This contest will take place at 1pm on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at The French Quarter Festival, outside the Old US Mint, between Barracks and Esplanade Streets in New Orleans, LA.
